Grizedale Class – Summer
Our Learning This Term
Here is our summer term parent leaflet to show you what we will be covering in class.
This term in maths we are covering a wide range of topics including: shape, time, volume, capacity, coordinates, statistics and money.
We will continue to improve on our skills with number and make sure we are confident with all of our formal written methods as well as our times tables. To help us with this we will be continuing to do weekly Big Maths sessions.
Our focus will remain on reasoning and problem solving with special focus on how to explain our mathematical understanding in words and diagrams as well as with number.
Year 4 will take part in the national trial of the ‘Multiplication tables check’ in June and they have been working hard to ensure that they do their best.
Any extra work on times tables and extra maths support at home is always useful and of great benefit to your child.
This term in English we will be covering a number of different genres to help our breadth of study. We will be linking our studies to our theme of Marvelous Machines by working on the stories of The Iron Man and The Invention of Hugo Cabret. With these texts as a stimulus, we will write newspaper reports, create our own versions of events and even write poetry.
We will continue to read daily as part of guided reading but also have time for reading our class novels together. We will also complete daily spelling sessions as well as having focused grammar lessons every week.
In science this term we will be exploring the fascinating world of forces and magnets before moving onto work on states of matter. We will be looking at what a force is and how they can be measured, how forces can change the way in which things move and looking at the forces we encounter in everyday life. We will then go on to investigate states of matter and the properties of solids, liquids and gases.
